There are several I had forgotten on it.I may have gone a little overboard in my search for pedigree purity.I indeed wanted an excuse to include some Megaten games while excluding Pokemon. It's difficult to explain, but I felt that monster collecting in a traditional JRPG should be a means to an end (maybe like Dragon Quest V), and not the whole point of the game.
I don't think I've played enough of either to draw a line between the two clearly. And also the obvious point that almost every turn-based RPG before Pokemon could be described as a Dragon Quest-clone of some kind.I may also be guilty of a little demographic snobbery here. In my head, the traditional JRPG is for teenagers to maybe young adults. Killing a god to save the world and all that stuff (even Dragon Warrior II back in 1987 is arguably this plot). If monster collection games have you killing a god, then they deserve to be on the list.As for ATB systems, this was another difficult point. If a game has a fairly important movement turn (real time or otherwise), I would assume it was tactical or hybrid combat. That's why I removed the Neptunia games, because I felt that the movement turn was too involved to really be called Traditional turn-based combat (I haven't actually played it though. This is from looking at videos). The short version is that I felt I had to include the ATB Final Fantasy games as 'Traditional'.but I probably wasn't thinking it through.
In actuality ATB is a fairly radically alteration to Dragon Quest turn based combat, and so probably deserves to go in the Hybrid category along with some Tri Ace games and the like?As for Dungeon Crawlers, I feel the first person perspective completely changes the feel of the game. I know that Dragon Quest was actually inspired by dungeon crawlers like Wizardry, though so perhaps I will post a separate list underneath. Found this list via google. Thanks for this list.
I guess people would have problems with whats considered traditional and whats not considered traditional. If you had simply said heres a list of turn-based games without including Dungeon Crawlers and some Monster Collectors since you dont play them without going into whats traditional and whats not traditional, I don't think anyone would have any issues. My own personal lists I also categorize exactly like you because it helps me in deciding what to play. You can also check out this subreddit's Official List of Jrpgs to see if you missed any or can even add missing games to the list as any user can add to the list -. SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions just came out for PS4 and the battle system is pretty traditional. It looks like you're also missing the Romancing SaGa remake for the PS2, which is distinct enough from the original to be worth mentioning. Dark Rose Valkyrie for the PS4 is also pretty good, but it uses an ATB system, so I'm not sure if that counts?
Trinity Universe for the PS3 is traditional with a different kind of attack system. Cross Edge and Agarest War 2 might also be close to what you are looking for.I would appreciate some help with some of the more strange games.
Is Grandia a Traditional JRPG? Or is it some kind of real time hybrid? What about Final Fantasy XIII-Lighting Returns? They're kind of borderline. It's functionally no more action based than say, normal Final Fantasy games with the ATB system turned on. They look flashier though.
It depends on how you feel about ATB I guess.I'm honestly not sure how you're defining 'traditional RPG' in this context. Is it just the combat? Does it include exploration systems?
There are some odd combinations on that list. I'm defining 'traditional JRPG' as turn based combat + some kind of overworld / town exploration + dungeons. Combat is absolutely the main thing I'm looking for though.I define traditional turn based as giving the player a feeling of control. I like to feel like Dio from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. I like frozen enemies to just stand there and take my attacks until my turn is done. Something like Final Fantasy XII moves too fast to control, even though technically they are taking turns. Enemies don't just stand there and wait for my turn to end before fighting back.I have added the Saga games you mentioned, Grandia, Dark Rose Valkyrie and Trinity Universe.I will look into Cross Edge and Agarest War 2.
